Content: India Hunger Index – Index to indicate the level of malnourishment at district level using the Global Hunger Index framework.
Five parameters have been used to calculate the index, namely:
- Under Five Mortality Rate (U5MR)
- Children under 5 years who are stunted
- Children under 5 who are wasted
- Women (15-49 years) who are underweight (below normal BMI)
- Men (15-49 years) who are underweight (below normal BMI)
While the Global Hunger Index (GHI) covers countries for which data is available, it does not however cover regions within those countries. For a large and populous country like India, granular hunger related data indicators at the state and district level are an imperative in order to focus policies and efforts better.
The India Data Insights team at Sattva has therefore created an India Hunger Index (IHI) to fill this gap and allows comparison of Indian states and districts on this critical social indicator.
Data for the five indicators listed above was obtained from National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) that dates to 2015-16.
